Not going to the Flackenhacks

It’s been a while since I last posted – the longest hiatus bar holidays in fact. This is quite simply because I haven’t been able to think of anything interesting to say. Or it could be a worrying sign that I’ve learned all I needed to learn from blogging. My blogging is flagging. My posting is lagging. My blog-fu is sagging.

Which brings us in a pararhyme-about way to the Flackenhacks. I won’t be able to make it because I stupidly double-booked myself to see Russell Howard tomorrow (he of the cheeky schoolboy humour from Mock the Week). So, if anyone’s reading this, say hello to TWL from Friendly Ghost for me.

Stephen Fry: Tech blogger?!?!?!?!?

First there was the Salmon of Doubt. Now, Stephen Fry has totally come out as a tech blogger (although you might not be able to see this because his site is currently down, presumably as a result of traffic).

At first, I did not believe this was a real blog. The mere idea of Stephen Fry as a geek just didn’t compute. I thought it was a PR stunt. But no, his smartphones blog entry is liberally sprinkled with indisputable Fryisms: “to predicate a useful Platonic ideal”; “my dear, have you seen the E61 and E61i?”; and signing off with “As the General Confession in the Book of Common Prayer has it, ‘I have followed too much the devices and desires of my own heart.’ Amen.” Yep, that’s Stephen Fry. Even the Guardian says so.

And his entry (that’s probably a Fryism too) is remarkably well-informed. He clearly knows his stuff. He compares and contrasts technologies, approaches and models down the years. He knows about server-side apps. He talks about inferior networks. He mentions the UIQ platform. What the hell is that?

Turns out he’s been ‘at it’ for quite some time. He’s co-author, with Douglas Adams, of the Salmon of Doubt. Adams was well known for being an uber-geek. Dawkins contributed too (I read the God Delusion on a summer holiday this year). Something tells me I must read that book: perhaps it’s a confluence of genius.

So, welcome Mr. Fry. Welcome to the blogosphere where geeks wail and nerds weep, where the panorama is one that encompasses heaven and hell like a veritable Hieronymous Bosch triptych. One thing I know: it will be interesting to see how the iPhone fares on Google Trends as a result of this.

Cadburys vs Phil Collins, Apple vs Microsoft. Or: it seems people in the UK are more interested in Apple now, than in Microsoft, for possibly the first time ever. What a long title that is for a blog post.

I’ve been playing around with Google Trends, a-la-Micropersuasion. Some of it I do get, and some of it I don’t. But one thing I have discovered: people in the UK seem to be looking for Apple more than Microsoft, at the tail-end of a trend that seems pretty constant over the past three years.

My Google Trend-o-mania started today when someone was watching the Cadburys Gorilla ad. Seems everyone loves it. They don’t know why, they just do (perhaps that’s the point?). But could people also start loving Phil Collins again, given its prominence in the ad, I wondered? According to Google Trends, yes. There’s a definite upward slope for both since the ad launched. Good news for Phil Collins fans, not so great for music lovers.

Let’s look at some more: did people bother about the Al-Fayeds as much as Diana? No. Has Gordon Brown supplanted Tony Blair yet? Yes.

How about looking within the UK at coverage of football vs rugby. Is rugby up? Yes – and so is football, but rugby more so. However it seems that, while people are looking for rugby news more (the top chart), the amount of news picked up by Google News is fairly constant (bottom chart).

But notice a strange thing: if you click the links given, on the Gordon Brown/Tony Blair trends, to the right it says ‘No news articles were found.’ What-what-what-what-what? I don’t understand. I can understand a US-centricity to results but that’s riddliculous. Then again, look at the news articles listed to the right of the Diana search. One of them is CheshireOnline. CheshireOnline? I grew up in Cheshire and I can tell you, it’s great for cats and cheese but is not a particular centre of Diana-worship.

Two more searches: how, comparatively, are Microsoft and Apple doing? In all regions, Apple is definitely closing the gap. Moldova.org is singled out as a particular authority on this issue. I know, let’s forget Moldova. Let’s just look at the UK – and it would seem that, within the UK, Apple really has just overtaken Microsoft in search volume. In other words, people are looking for Apple more than they are Microsoft. I guess you could point at the iPhone for this but I would say this merely continues a trend you can see developing over the past three years.

So what does this tell us?

Housekeeping: three PR blog moves

We recently had three movers in the FG Blogroll. Given that this might affect their positions in the Power150 and PowerPR index (yes, I’m still working on it), here are the changes:

  • IndiaPRBlog has moved from http://indiapr.blogspot.com/ to http://www.indiaprblog.com/. This blog consistently comes up with good, useful information and comment, proving that PR lessons can be learnt from any source regardless of geography.
  • Barbara Rozgonyi has fled the WordPress platform to www.barbararozgonyi-wiredprworks.com. I wonder if this is anything to do with the little contretemps she had with them a while back? If so then I’m sure she’s made the right decision – update your blogrolls please.
  • Finally – and I’m not the first to report on this – TWL has not only moved but had a distinct facelift, from http://theworldsleading.blogspot.com/ to  http://www.theworldsleading.net/. It’s an extremely original look and I’m sure it hasn’t just come about as a ‘nice to have’ – to me, this signals some real statement of intent about TWL’s plans to become a reference blog, not least with the mini-ads for jobs and services and the fact that TWL employed a design agency for the new look. It’s a welcome change and proof that PR blogs are becoming more sophisticated.

It’s interesting to note that all the moves are away from blog platforms to unique URLs. Could this be a trend? If so it implies to me a greater permanence and independence in the PR blogosphere. This could be an interesting tie-in with the recent indication that PR blogging is declining in quantity – which could almost imply an increase in quality.

If/when I finally get the latest PowerPR table out I shall be basically adding up all the metrics to give an overall ‘PowerPR index’, from when it will be interesting to see, like the FTSE, how the blogosphere is doing – is it expanding or contracting and if so, at what rate?

Enhancements to the Power150

The Power150 is here to stay, like it or not.

So, while it’s still all lovely and fresh and new, here are some enhancements I’d like to see on it:

  • A script for including your position in the list on your blog. I currently update mine to the left of this blog manually, but an automated script would be better. And, for wordpress.com users who cannot use script, a Feedburner-like chicklet would be nice.
  • Taking inspiration from financial systems, I think we need to see a timestamp for the last update, then from that we can see who’s moved up/down since, alongside the biggest risers/fallers or most/least active over the day/ week/ month/ quarter/ year. Charts would be cool too, complete with simple indicators such as moving averages. And then a total for the entire list – total Technorati Authority, total Bloglines score – would serve as the total ‘index’, again with charting and movement indicators. It could be very interesting to see whether the blogosphere as defined by the Power150 is expanding or contracting.
  • And one thing to take away: the mysterious ‘Todd’ rating. To me, this is totally bogus. Why add something so subjective? OK, so you can explain away the worth of the other metrics but this one really doesn’t belong here.
